In the 2024 White House race, former President Trump is running for reelection against Vice President Harris. As the race heats up, US elections 2024 predictions are increasingly influenced by these unexpected controversies. After President Biden stepped away from his campaign and endorsed Harris for the Democratic nomination, Team Trump had to pivot its strategies suddenly. The game plan put in place to run against Biden will not necessarily prove effective against the vice president. In the less than two weeks that Harris has ascended to presumptive Democratic nominee status, she’s been taking potshots at the Trump campaign. The vice president’s team is also countering various Trump attacks by rolling various footage of the former commander-in-chief (and his running mate J. D. Vance) making questionable statements.
Previously, Trump’s team had plans to hit Harris with attacks that would neutralize her momentum in this year’s White House race. However, this has gone sideways since the former president’s sit-down with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
Trump’s Latest Controversy and the Plan to Target Harris
For just over 30 minutes this week, the former president joined the NABJ for a question-and-answer session. However, things quickly went awry when Trump was pressed on some of his statements and criticisms of black media personalities and others. Then, when the former president stated Harris “happened to turn black” after being “Indian all the way,” this gave his critics some serious ammunition.
Up until this point, Trump’s campaign was using immigration as an issue to target the vice president. Republicans have hammered Harris on the southern border, arguing she didn’t do enough to fix problems even when Biden put her in charge as the czar.
Yet when Trump attacks Harris on issues like race and ethnicity, it draws attention away from any perceived policy failings that Republicans may want to draw attention to. In the end, Trump’s allies are going to have a harder time making criticisms against the vice president stick after Trump’s sit-down with the NABJ.
Comments about Harris’ racial identity likewise give Democrats ammunition to brand Republicans as racist and bigoted. The left has been accusing the right wing of this for years. The latest controversy from Trump only feeds into this and helps Democrats make inroads with voters who’ve become disaffected with the former president.
Americans who may lean conservative, yet have soured on Trump, are a key demographic that Harris campaign is trying to reach. Just last week, the vice president’s team stated that people who voted against Trump during the Republican primary have a place with the Harris camp. On social media, some of these folks – such as the Haley Voters For Harris group – are stating they plan to back Harris in November, despite having certain policy disagreements with her. This could prove problematic for Trump, who needs the support of not just Republicans, but also swing voters and Independents in order to retake the Oval Office.
Harris’ Response to the Latest Trump Attack
The vice president hasn’t hesitated to push back on statements made by Trump about her racial background. While publicly speaking, Harris branded the remarks as “the same old show.” She then proceeded to accuse the former president of being “divisive” and “disrespectful” before pointing out the American people deserve better.
Further in her rebuttal, Harris stated the nation needs a president who can tell the truth and not resort to “anger” or “hostility” when pressed on certain issues. The vice president’s clear message in these comments is that she does not feel Trump meets these benchmarks. Various allies to Harris have been underscoring these same points as well.
Americans may also be familiar with Harris hitting Trump on issues like abortion and over the Heritage Foundation’s controversial Project 2025 plan. This is an initiative that the vice president warns would be disastrous for healthcare, the economy, and many other areas.
While the Trump campaign has worked to distance itself from Project 2025, Harris’ team has insisted that aides and allies to the former president were involved in forming the project. The vice president’s team, via their Kamala HQ account on social media, is also regularly sharing footage that ties Vance to Project 2025.
US Elections 2024 Predictions and the Impact of Trump’s Comments
Political pundits and even some Republicans are weighing in on the perceived missteps of Trump attacks and attacks from his allies. One common viewpoint is that Harris should not be branded as a “DEI hire.” Republicans like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Fox News host Neil Cavuto are warning this type of rhetoric could turn off voters.
Critics have also gone after Trump for his latest remarks about Harris during his appearance with the National Association of Black Journalists. Stating that the vice president is biracial, many people feel that accusing her of “turning black” won’t do Trump any favors.
Moving forward, the former president and other Republicans will have to figure out how to hit Harris without alienating voters. So far, the Trump campaign is being warned that its current strategies are not working and failing to move the needle with everyday people.
Harris, on the other hand, continues to experience momentum in this race. Days ago, the vice president campaigned in Atlanta, Georgia, daring Trump to join her on a debate stage and voice his criticisms of her “to his face.”
The second presidential debate is scheduled to take place next month, on September 10. Previously, Trump and Biden were expected to face off against one another during this time. Yet, with the president now out of the race, it calls into question whether Trump will agree to go toe-to-toe with Harris in just over one month.
At this time, the future political strategies of the Trump campaign remain to be seen. Though with less than 100 days remaining until Election Day, allies of the former president will have to quickly shift gears. Harris’ campaign, on the other hand, is expected to announce its vice presidential candidate within days and start campaigning across the nation’s battleground states.
